We can easily encounter birds in our daily life. Birds, with more than 9000 species, are scattered in every corner of the earth. They are able to live everywhere; in the garden, beach, mountain, and even in the remotest and most extreme places such as polar region, Himalayan Mountain and Dead Sea, the lowest point of earth of 400 m below sea level.

That is why birds are closely related to human life. Since prehistoric time until now, bird has always enriched human life. Their song brightened dull days, their beauty feather even their meats.

In the nature, bird is an important element of the ecosystem. Bird is the indicator for environmental destruction. Population decrease of a bird species is an early hint of a damaged environment.

With its various functions, bird is a precious asset of nature. However, the development under the banner of modernization has started to threaten wildlife, including bird. Around the globe, many bird species face extinction.

As one of the largest tropical countries, Indonesia has high bird diversity. More than 1,500 bird species can be found in Indonesia. It is 17% of total number of bird species in the world. With twenty-four endemic bird areas scattered from Sabang to Merauke, BirdLife International declared Indonesia as the country who has the most endemic bird areas. Unfortunately, at least 119 bird species in Indonesia face extinction.

The huge list of threatened bird species show how Indonesia is facing an extremely environment damage. And if this damage growth does not stopped, as an estimation Indonesia will lose a large amount of their forest in 2010. It means that bird conservation effort in Indonesia is unavoidable.

In this way, bird conservation movement is not merely to save birds or an eco-fascism movement. “Bird is an entrance to save the environment,” Ige Kristianto, Executive Director of Kutilang Indonesia Foundation, explains. Birds cannot survive if the forest is damaged. That is why to save birds is important.
