Kabar Burung is Indonesian word for rumor, story or report of unverified or doubtful truth. But, this “Kabar Burung” defies the meaning. Why? Because “Kabar Burung” is the name of a magazine about birds and their lifes in natural habitat (burung is Indonesian word for bird) published by Yayasan Kutilang Indonesia. |

Kabar Burung magazine was first published on November 1997 in a modest format. Nevertheless, this magazine is the first Indonesian-made magazine about wild bird in Indonesia. Main themes of Kabar Burung are birds in their natural habitat. Kabar Burung urges people to love and appreciate the beauty of birds in the nature, not in capture. Kabar Burung was free and circulated in Central Java, Surabaya, Bogor and Jakarta. Kabar Burung designs evolve continuously. The finest was 2005 editions, with more contents and full colour. “I am very glad to see an environment magazine, specialized in bird, with great layout and fine print quality,” commented Riza Marlon, a prominent wildlife photographer in Indonesia (Kabar Burung, edition II, 2005). To stop the dependency to funding organizations and encourage self-sufficiency, these lux editions were sold at price Rp 15.000,- . However, birdwatching is not yet a trend among Indonesian and reducing its reader segment. In addition, the price is considered too expensive. “It's too expensive,” said Anik Susilo, a birdwatching enthusiast. As an information enforcement media, Kabar Burung could be concidered as an effective media with the large target groups of all community level. Some birdwatchers or birdwatching clubs even risen start from this bulletin. In 2006, Kabar Burung is still suspended. “We are looking for sponsorship for the next publication,” said Ige Kristanto, the Director of Kutilang Indonesia Foundation, optimistically. | |
